Finding a rare antique while scrimmaging through Los Angeles Antique shops in search of Los Angeles antiques is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially when one finds antiques Los Angeles is known for.
The 1916 Edison Phonograph Player is one of the rarest and most sought-after antiques. A good amount of the player was produced and few remain today, making the value of those that do fairly considerable.
Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877 which used grooved cylinders wrapped in tin foil into which sound waves were etched. Edison was a strong supporter of cylinder technology because of the uniform groove speed of cylinders. He also preferred this vertical method of cutting the grooves as opposed to the lateral method used by most other companies because the grooves were narrower and could be spaced more closely together, permitting longer recordings on a given surface area.
In spite of continuous improvements to his machines and cylinders, by 1910 Edison was the only major company still issuing cylinder recordings, and sales were falling because the competing technology offered consumers more music for their money, with double-sided recording capability.
Behind Mr. Edison’s back, his engineers began work on a disc machine and records. Edison soon became enthusiastic and two and a half years, and three million dollars later, the Edison Diamond Disc phonograph was born. It was first introduced in 1912 and was produced until the middle of 1927.
Nowadays, collectors who understand the value of first generation music players and the value they hold would be the main individuals who purchase and own such antiques. Understanding the value of any antique is the first step in obtaining and collecting valuable pieces that will only increase in value as time passes.
